The Renzo Piano Building Workshop, founded by the Genoa-born Renzo Piano, is an international firm of architects based in Paris, Genoa and New York. The office has built and continues to build a broad range of landmark projects across the world, having started with the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The design and construction of The Shard has been a long, creative and collaborative adventure for all those who have worked on it. This event marks the beginning of The Shard starting to find its place in the urban framework of London.

In the development of The Shard at London Bridge, Keltbray has carried out work to the value of around £32 million, including the successful demolition of the former 27 storey 1970s Southwark Bridge Tower block on site. Keltbray also undertook extensive civil engineering and re-modelling works at the station to ensure that rail services could continue operating during the construction phase. Finally, Keltbray carried out enabling works and sub structure works which comprised of top down basement excavation and the removal of more than 40,000 m³ spoil material.
